The Gospel Project Unit 20:3 John Pointed to Jesus
Today’s Bible Lesson is from Matthew 3; John 1; 3
We take one last look at John the Baptist, or John the Witness and see why his role in the Biblical narrative of Jesus was so important. John was the witness to the Messiah, pointing others to Him. When people began to question why Jesus was baptizing and gaining followers, John continued to point to Jesus as the one who was greater than himself. John was never interested in seeking the glory for himself. His purpose, from the time the Angel of the Lord announced his coming birth to his mother Elizabeth, was to prepare the way for the Messiah.
John shows us what true humility looks like. Humility is not thinking less of ourselves; we are created in the image of God and thus thinking less of ourselves would be thinking less of God. Humility is finding our worth in the Gospel! The finished work of Jesus gives us value that we could never have on our own. Humility is believing the fullness of Jesus and counting it as our greatest treasure. It is also looking to others as more valuable than ourselves, loving to the extent that Jesus loved. This was the example John set as he stepped aside to point to Jesus. He did so to the extent of death because he knew that the joy of being a witness to the Messiah could never be taken away, not even by death.
Big Picture Question: Why did Jesus become human? Jesus become human to obey His father’s plan and rescue sinners.
Key Passage: John 3:30- “He must increase, but I must disagree.”
